 Welcome to Winterholme!

In 1993 this magnificent property was restored to a
single family home and today is a 4-star Heritage Inn,
with 11 well-approached suites, an in-house spa service and
a large main floor that is often used for special functions.

In 2005, Winterholme began to celebrate its 100th year from
the start of its construction, and 2007 marks its completion.

Below is a photo of Winterholme taken around 1915.

Winterholme is centrally located in the Heritage District
of St. John's, across from Bannerman Park and just a
short walk to most of the City’s major attractions.
We are only a 10 min drive from the
St. John's International Airport.

Newfoundland is the most easterly Province of Canada. It is
also the most easterly point in North America and the closest you can be to Europe, without getting wet. We are affectionately known as ... The Far East of the Western World... however, we do speak English, even if with a little Irish accent. We also speak French on our west coast and of course, St. Pierre & Michelon is a short ferry-ride from the boot of the Burin Peninsula.

Winterholme is one of the best examples of the
Queen Anne Revival style anywhere in Canada. This style, and this house, is marked on the exterior by an expansive and bold design with a prominent circular bay, handsome and well executed trim and decoration reflecting classical and historic motifs. A picturesque roof lined with windows and gables.

Despite its irregular appearance, the plan is quite symmetrical with an interior arranged around the central axis of the stairwell. The rooms, as is typical of this style of domestic architecture, are large, comfortable, and richly decorated with wood, tiles, colored and beveled glass and fine plaster work.

The intent at Winterholme, and with the Queen Anne Style generally, was to consciously display to the community
the good taste and social status of the occupants in an era
which we have come to call 'The Gilded Age'.

“Winterholme is an outstanding example of the Queen Anne Revival Style, popular in Canadian house construction from the 1880’s to 1914. Influenced by British and American models, the Queen Anne Revival favored eclectic historical motifs, picturesque design, varied materials and distinctive windows.

In Atlantic Canada, such houses were built of wood and tended to have stately, symmetrical facades and plans. Built in 1905-1907, Winterholme has a splendid opulent interior, featuring decorative plaster and elaborate woodwork. The house is a key landmark in this Historic District".
